The Precious Human Life

A week before Chang passed on, a mutual girlfriend made a remark that he must have been very disappointed at the outcome of his therapies, in particular the Gerson Therapy. That Chang put himself through such a tasteless Gersons Therapy diet yet it failed to shrink the tumours.

It struck me then how very different we human beings view the same situation. Probably, because I had never heard Chang express his disappointment that I never saw it in such a light.  So, what is your point of view? Do you think that the Gerson Therapy was a failure?

In the early days, he was a very staunch supporter of the Gerson Therapy and was hopeful especially after the first few months when he saw some results. However, he also said that the Gerson Therapy would take between one and half to two years to work. After that, he would have to look into other alternative therapies. At that time, he combined the Gerson Therapy with TCM herbs from CA Care and urine therapy. But as I recall, he started looking shortly after he came back from Mexico. He went into LDN, which threw his sleep cycle out of whack, fungicide therapy and snake grass which caused alot of phlegm and he was coughing blood.

While he must have been disappointed (as anyone would) that the Gerson Therapy did not manage to cure his cancer, I dont think he was ever disappointed with the Gerson Therapy per se. In fact, he promoted it everywhere he went.

Some quarters say the Gerson Therapy is outdated. He used to say that from reading the write-ups, this therapy and that therapy seems so effective but he has not met one single real life person who attests to a cure. I said, "Mr Chang, as a person who has done marketing and sales before, you should know that they will advertise successful cases but how many are unsuccessful, we wouldn't know." He said "There are so many therapies out there. Which to choose?" I reasoned that because we are different and have different body types and inclinations, different therapies work for different people. The tough part is choosing the right one.

The Gerson Therapy can be quite a regimented therapy with its 13 juices a day, no oil, no salt, no sugar and lots of potatoes and little rice with up to 6 coffee enemas a day.  And he was doing all the marketing, washing vegetables, cutting carrots, juicing, boiling coffee, etc alone. Not to mention, writing this blog and doing all the reading and research as well. He really did put himself through alot. Who has his kind of motivation and determination?  In a way, he was very fortunate that he had all along been a very healthy and strong man. He still had alot of energy and he could run around and was very independent.

I told my girlfriend that as yet, there is no known cure for cancer. What the Gerson Therapy did for him, as Chang himself said was to control the growth of the tumours. In cancer, having a therapy that is able to control tumour growth is very, very good already. It gave him the extra few years of life. But Chang was out to carve a path to cure himself so he combined various therapies.

I used to tell him that he had just switched jobs from IT consultant to alternative health therapist. Still a workhorse. He was also a perfectionist. In the early days, he followed the manual almost to a tee. Scouring the organic shops for brown rice mee hoon with zero sodium (salt) in it. Squeezing water from vegetables before juicing because he insisted that the Gerson Therapy does not allow water. Over time, he learned to take some shortcuts and to be more relaxed with the therapy.

Chang told me that had it not been for cancer, he would have travelled to Singapore to work and focused on earning money. Cancer stopped him in his tracks to reflect on his life. I felt that his cancer journey was a learning curve for him in many ways. In his pre-cancer days, he would not have spent his money on organic foodstuff or drank vegetable juices.

Lets not take for granted the life we have. When we come close to losing it, see how hard we fight to keep it. We are willing to travel the world to find a cure, for that "extra" few years, days or even minutes of life, for that one extra breath.  Realise how precious our human life is.

Wake up each morning to see each new day as an  "extra" time or "bonus" time. The journey of our life really is to hold that precious time in our hands and use it wisely.  What is it that stirs our heart? What is it that gives life meaning? Know that we have the power to change our lives and live differently. Look through our "bucket" list and do what we long to accomplish in this lifetime. Most importantly, say what we mean to say to our loved ones. Don't wait.

  1. You are a very wise person. I have a feeling we could be good friends. I agree fully with what you wrote above. We should not wait to do things that our heart yearns for (unless of course if those actions will hurt others), for life really is short.

I am a stage 4 cancer patient, and have been living with cancer for close to 18 months now. oncology nomenclature is scary, isn't it? stage 4 or last stage sounds scary, doesn't it? to many people, it means DEATH. but why should it be viewed that way? patients are defeated emotionally by it, even before it takes over them physically. caregivers respond to it by behaving and reacting in a certain way towards the patient, reinforcing the notion of impending death. Worse still, insensitive medical professionals seal the fate of patients by putting across info to the patients as if it's just another stats.

Unbeknownst to me, this was what happened behind me. my doctors and certain close friends (as informed by doctors) thought I would be gone by now. In their words, she won't live past this new year. 10 months have gone by since the new year. I have surprised many people around me. Not only am I still alive, I am as normal as one can be. I thank God for His mercy upon me. This is not to say that the journey is easy. I am still undergoing treatment. The beasts are not gone, they lived within me, co-existing with me, but I intend to keep them tamed forever if I couldn't get rid of them. This is how I view cancer. Looking at it as a chronic illness which needs managing. Mean time, live life like never before.

However, not every cancer is the same, each journey is unique. Depending on the severity of the condition, sometimes it may be advisable to deal with it using aggressive regimens head-on first. The intent is to stabilize the condition of the patients first, before looking at longer term alternative treatments which are less punishing. Gerson therapy, I believe, is one such longer-term alternative treatment. We need to hit those cancer cells before they have the chance to proliferate out of control, because once they did, it will be extremely difficult to rein them in or to reverse their growth.

I know it's too late to comment on what Chang should have done. That was a journey chosen by him, which he was at peace with. He felt empowered by making those decisions, judging from the entries he made in his blog. I guess that was his nature and his choices, and who are we to comment. I am thankful that he was selfless in sharing all that he learned in his journey, the positives and the negatives.

    1. Dear HC,

I wish to acknowledge your strength and courage in handling this chronic disease. It take great mental strength and maturity to rise above the circumstances. When others gave up on you, you did not give up on yourself. That's the most important and valuable thing you have done for yourself.
I salute you and admire your spirit.

  2. Hi Bodhi Circle,

I found Chang's blog while I was writing about Sabah Snake Grass and The Gerson Therapy. I am not here to promote my site. Those who think otherwise, please don't go to the link, below.

I wrote about a monk who had successfully cured his cancer through the Gerson Therapy. I was so excited that I communicated with Chang, not knowing that my so-called "saviour" treatment was already in Chang's treatment regime.

You can go to this link to read about this monk's experience.

    1. Dear Justin,

I read the monk's experience when Chang was alive. In fact, we discussed it and Chang said that the monk's approach was modified. However, my opinion is that the monk's approach was much more holistic incorporating alot of relaxation, breathing exercises and meditation, which is as important if not more, than just a diet change.

  4. I have been listening to some audio recordings and reading some TCM articles about cancer and chronic ailments with relation to emotions and I find the ancient chinese therapy named "xinli liabing" espoused very enlightening.

This therapy was started by a Manchurian peasant name Wang Fengyi and is currently introduced into the Western world.

This is another alternative therapy may be worth exploring.

  5. Hi Bodhi circle

I am so happy you are here and still sharing your selfless thoughts and experiences. I decided to be your follower.
Let's not take our life for granted, we should change our pattern of life, be it our food, diet, exercise and lifestyle, most important less stress in our life. We should follow meditation, breathing and relaxation like the monks. It really does wonders to our body. The monks only have food, medication, roof under their head and their robe, yet they can be so pure, happy and healthy, they have no money and attachments. Just imagine. Let's hope we also can......do it.

    Regards
    Sze

  6. There is one very interesting therapy that was developed by this Taiwanese TCM practioner called Origin point therapy (http://cch-foundation.org/wp/). The English handbook can be download at
    http://cch-foundation.org/wp/sample-page-2/%E6%89%8B%E5%86%8A%E5%85%A7%E5%AE%B9/.
His wife had cancer and he is a TCM Dr and he could not even help his wife recovered. When his wife cancer's was in her late state, she had pain all over her body. In order to help her eased the pain, he hired few helpers to massage her body. He noted that after massages, his wife's pain would ease. Then he found out that by actually massaging certain points on our body would help ease the pain.
Since his wife passed away, he continued experiment with his finding, and tested on many other patients and found that to be very powerful which could help resolve many health problem including cancer.
He also documented his method meticulously. You can watch his presentation in youtube.
After reading and watching his materials, I felt that the gearson therapy is not ideal because too much fruits juice and vegetable would make our body become 'cooler' (term use in TCM). The latter will weaken the body in the long run because the cancer patient's body constitution usually is severely 'cool' or 'yin'.
    Hope this will help.

  7. read a lot and came across lots of contradicting info. most of the info i got are jigsaw puzzle pcs. hv been trying to piece the pcs together to get the complete picture.

below are some info i found and some conclusions that i came to. feel free to voice out you if u don't agree. we can share and learn.

cancer is a surviving mechanism that allows us to live on by storing all the toxins that the body cannot eliminate fast enough. toxic overload causes cancer. if we can detox faster than the body accumulates toxins, we can reverse it, else it spreads. if it's cut out and the body is still toxic overload, cancer will pop out else where.

human eats cooked food which deprives us from enzymes that helps digestions. to overcome this, we eat fermented food. but nowadays all off the shelve fermented food is pasturised making them void of good bacteria. and the antibiotics we consume kill off the good bacteria. not forgetting stressful life style and processed food that we ingest. this is when trouble begins, we are lack of enzymes and good bacteria to digest our food and eliminate toxins fr or body. this will enable candida, food intolerance, enzema, cancer, etc. to flourish.

it takes anything between 5 to 20 yrs for cancer to show itself. even if we r eliminating toxins faster than we accumulate, it will take a long time for it to regress. in most cases, cancer patients are too impatient and will resort to drastic actions if it does not regress in a very short time.

as a chinese, i believe in balancing the body but the gerson's diet does not do that. our bodies also need good fats to ensure they function well as hormones are made fr cholesterol.

what worked for someone might not work for another. eg, someone who is very yang, will do good if given yin food. if a person is very yin and is given yin food, it will only makes it worst.

just sharing what i knew. hope it's of help to anyone reading it.

  8. From the viewpoint of TCM, yes, Gerson Therapy is too yin since it is about juicing of vegs. However, vegs are alkali which is the nemesis of cancer. Cancer thrives when the body state is acidic.

My opinion is looking at our body's constitution (whether yin or yang), we should adjust the Gerson Therapy accordingly because it is a natural form of therapy.

  9. Hi everybody,

I am not a cancer patient but I have had to look at Gerson Therapy last year and learnt a lot about it. The therapy explains cancer as a result of deficiency (of vital minerals, enzymes, vitamins etc) and toxicity. So they give the body the nutrients it needs by diet and detoxify the liver with coffee enemas. They also say the tyroid and liver are not working as they should if someone has cancer so they support them with supplements. Iodine, desiccated tyroid, cyanocobalamin(b12/liver extract injections, niacin(b3) and a few more are a daily part of this therapy.

It is true that the therapy takes about 2 years to heal. And it is very difficult to practice. Gerson people advise patients to hire someone if they cannot get the help otherwise. It is simply impossible to do this therapy fully by yourself so most people do as much as they can, often without the full supplements. Even that much helps immensely but the Gerson therapy is fine tuned with every component having an important job to do.

I have great faith in Gerson therapy and still follow the dietary style and buy organic when I can. Hopefully that will be enough to keep me healthy for a long time to come.

  10. I am doing the coffee enema as well as drinking vegetable juices daily for the moment. One tip if there is a fear of juices being too cooling is to add a bit of ginger to the juices. Sometimes I add fresh tumeric root as it is a powerful anti-inflammatory.
